Amidst the Turbulent Emotions: Some Reflection There are times when I feel overwhelmed by my emotions. When problems seem insurmountable, and there seems to be no way out, I find myself at a loss. As I go through these periods of emotional turbulence, I have learned to be patient with myself. I remind myself that it is okay to not be okay. In my journey of learning to manage my emotions, I have also learned to be mindful of the things that trigger negative emotions in me. For instance, I have realized that sleep deprivation makes me more irritable and prone to anxiety. Thus, I make a conscious effort to get enough rest at night. Furthermore, I have learned to set realistic expectations for myself. Often, it is the unrealistic goals and expectations that we set for ourselves that bring about feelings of disappointment and frustration. By setting achievable goals, I can celebrate even small accomplishments and avoid feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. In conclusion, we all experience emotional turbulence from time to time. What sets us apart is how we choose to handle these emotions. For some, unhealthy habits such as alcohol, drugs, or emotional eating may seem like a way out, but these only exacerbate the problem. On the other hand, healthy habits such as journaling, exercise, and self-care can provide a way of processing and working through the emotions. With time, patience, and a willingness to learn, we can develop healthy ways of managing our emotions and come out stronger on the other side.
